Parabens: Frequently Asked Questions

What are parabens?

Parabens are preservatives that elongate the shelf life of the health and beauty products. They help in preventing bacterial growth and mold within the products. Parabens may be found in many forms such as propylparaben, butylparaben, and methylparaben. Sometimes, more than one paraben may be used in one product.

How could I be exposed to parabens?

You could be exposed to parabens through swallowing, touching, or eating paraben-containing products. Products like hair care, lotions, lipsticks, shaving creams, and shampoos may contain parabens. Parabens from these products may get absorbed by the skin. Parabens may also be consumed through foods and pharmaceuticals.

Why are parabens considered harmful?

The parabens can penetrate the skin and settle in the tissue. The cumulative effect of the stored parabens in the body may pose a health risk. Parabens may act like estrogen. The increase of estrogen activity in the body may cause the breast cells to divide and trigger the growth of tumors. It may also cause reproductive issues.

How do parabens harm the environment?

Many scientists believe that parabens are partially responsible for killing off the coral and acting as a hormone disruptor in marine wildlife. Parabens have been found in tissue samples of marine animals such as sea otters. An analysis of the problem by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that parabens from the sink water have contaminated the bodies of several animals, such as bears and dolphins.

What are the alternatives to parabens?

If you want to use products that last longer and do not contain parabens, then look for products that use ethylhexylglycerin or phenoxyethanol as a preservative. Ethylhexylglycerin is a plant-driven skin conditioning agent, and phenoxyethanol is a naturally derived ether alcohol that is also used as a stabilizer in perfumes. Sodium Benzoate and Benzoic Acid are also alternatives to inexpensive parabens derived from nature.
